Its primary function is to control the flow of electrical current to the start winding of a motor during the startup phase and then disconnect it once the motor reaches a predetermined speed. The primary purpose of a start relay is to temporarily connect the start capacitor in series with the motor’s start winding during the startup phase. Start relays are typically compact devices with a coil, contacts, and a coil spring. The coil is energized during the startup phase, causing the contacts to close. Once the motor reaches a certain speed, the coil spring or other mechanism disengages the contacts, disconnecting the start capacitor from the circuit.
